Boxing is hugely popular in the West African country of Ghana. Fighters in the country are appreciated for their strength, toughness, and ability to bounce back from defeat. Ghana’s Wasiru “Gyatabi” Mohammed possesses all three qualities. The Ghanaian boxer is known for his forward fighting and his ability to score knockouts. Mohammed is closing one chapter in his career and opening another after signing to Bishop Boxing Promotions. This move shows that Mohammed is becoming more ambitious in his career and is looking to fight in other parts of the world. Mohammed grew up on the streets in Accra and found a way out of poverty through boxing after being spotted by his  current coach Larteykwei Lartey, who took him in and started his boxing journey. Fighting and competing with top tier boxers from Bukom, an area in Accra known as the home of boxing. Mohammed’s story exemplifies the fighting spirit of the region. After signing his first managerial contract in 2018 with E&J Promotions eventually Fight Ready Promotions, it was clear about his ambition when he destroyed respected veteran Kamarudeen Boyefio with a first round KO, winning the National Title at Super Bantamweight. This drew the attention of many to Mohammed and suggested the emergence of a formidable contender. A Quick Rise Through The Ranks The pursuit of championship titles started early in Mohammed’s career.

A Fast Rise Through The Ranks

In 2018, he faced exprienced fighter Isaac Sackey in a championship fight, who was defending his WBO Africa super bantamweight title. The fight, one of the most explosive fights of that year, ended after Mohammed dropped Sackey for the second time with a combination of ferocious blows hitting the canvas violently and the fight immediately stopped by the referee controversially,  leaving the night in chaos as Sackey fans displeased with the stoppage clashed with Mohammed fans and well wishers. Mohammed was eventually awarded the win via technical decision. This victory earned Mohammed the WBO Africa title and further established him as one of the most dangerous prospects in West Africa, also clinching the WBO Global title after a hard fought fight against tenacious and durable Tanzanian Loren Japhet in 2019.

Successfully defending his WBO Global Title after terrorising and eventually handing out a brutal KO against veteran and established boxer Ghislain Vodounhessi of Benin. His aggression and high work rate coupled with excellent knockout power earned him the title “Gyatabi” which means “Son of a Lion” from legendary Ghanaian and World boxing icon Azumah Nelson. Mohammed’s ambition pushed him further than the borders of Ghana and in 2020 signed a promotional deal with D&D Boxing Promotions headed by the late Cameron Dunkin who was very excited to start working with Mohammed. But the Covid 19 crisis put a stop to any progress after travel bans worldwide and lockdowns. Mohammed continues to work hard on his craft with varied competitive sparring, and Like most boxers, he had his share of challenges as well. In 2024 he experienced his first professional loss after being stopped in the 4th round during a match in South Africa. Ironically, that loss became the fuel to his fire. By 2025 he was back to winning fights again and this included the match against powerful Nigeria’s Sadiq Oyakojo which proved he was both mentally and physically strong and focused.

A Strategic Partnership

Collaborating with a Purpose Yet another milestone is the partnership with Bishop Boxing Promotions. “The collaboration is based on Mohammed’s ability to draw in the crowd with his aggression and finishing ability,” said Dave Bishop.

The Road Ahead

The objective is to secure the right fights to regain the titles. Mohammed’s fighting style and strength were also major reasons for the promotional changes noted John Manfo from Fight Ready Promotions. The Path Ahead His fights primarily occur within the super-bantamweight and Super feather-weight divisions. The future will bring more obstacles for him. But more obstacles mean more international competitions, more regional titles, and more recognition for his knockout power. Moreover, even more big-time promoter fights will lead to his first World Title shot. The objective is clear, the pathway is open, load the pressure, be relentless, and execute the required performance. Looking back Mohammed will not be sidestepping, will not be changing the direction, and will keep aiming to go straight and keep delivering with his hands.
