A jury found karen read update not guilty of second-degree murder and manslaughter on Wednesday, some three and a half years after her police officer lover, John O’Keefe, died in a strange way. On Wednesday, Karen Read was found not guilty of second-degree murder and manslaughter. These allegations were based on the unexplained death of her Boston police officer boyfriend, John O’Keefe, in 2022. After 21 hours of discussion, the jury found Read guilty of driving under the influence of alcohol, a lesser charge that was added to the judgment slip for the second trial. She got a year of probation. Read, who used to be an equity analyst, was accused of backing her car into O’Keefe and left him to die on the lawn of another cop.
Read talked about every part of her legal nightmare in detail during an exclusive three-day interview with VF last summer. She said that Michael Proctor, the MSP trooper who was in charge of her investigation, put pieces of her broken taillight at the crime scene to protect the homeowner, Boston police officer Brian Albert. (Proctor said this wasn’t true during the first trial. Albert has said he had nothing to do with O’Keefe’s death. His lawyer gayest team said that the MSP trooper was dishonorably discharged earlier this year for other misbehavior in this case and is now waiting for his appeal. During the second trial, Proctor and Albert did not speak.
The way the inquiry into karen read update death was handled was so strange that the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts started its own investigation. In March, special prosecutor Hank Brennan said that the investigation was over, but the US Attorney’s Office did not say whether or not the probe was real. Several defense witnesses also said that there was no proof that O’Keefe had been hit by an automobile. Dr. Elizabeth Laposata, a forensic pathologist, said plainly regarding Read’s SUV, “It didn’t hit him.”
Read has used up all her savings, sold her property, and relied on contributions to pay for more than three years of karen read trial update costs. A lot of her lawyers’ bills have been put off.
Robert Alessi, Victoria George, and nine law students who acted as clerks were also on Read’s legal team for her second trial. All of them worked for free.
“I worry about money right after the karen read trial update,” Read told VF, “but I’ll go back to work.” If I have to, I’ll get three jobs. All I want is for this to happen.
