The Pentagon has a new initiative to save $3 billion a year. These cuts will reportedly save the Pentagon $8 billion in U.S. service employee relocation costs by 2030. Relocations negatively impact service members, their spouse’s/partners employment, and the Defense Department’s unit cohesion. Beginning in 2027, the Pentagon is expected to cut operational, rotational, and discretionary travel for training.
Tim Dill, Acting Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness, stated, “What we are directing the [services] to do is purely to examine potential reductions in things that would be defined as discretionary.”

HomeSafe Privatization Contract Terminated
The Pentagon announced the complete termination of the Global Household Goods Contract with HomeSafe Alliance. This means there will no longer be a single private contractor responsible for all military moves. The contract was supposed to make moves easier, but instead, it created a lot of new issues that forced commands to take care of household goods issues instead of focusing on their training and operations. This was caused by delays and mishandling of shipments that occurred before the contract was fully rolled out.
Now, military moves are being done the same way they used to be before this contract through Personal Property Offices that are located on military installations. Per diem for PCS travel will now be $110 for lodging, and $68 for Meals and Incidental Expenses (M&IE) for most locations in the continental United States (CONUS).
There may be a shortage of carriers this year because of higher demand. As soon as possible, book your move. This also applies to flights if you are moving overseas. Keep detailed inventories for your packed household goods. Use a separate inventory for any items you believe to be high value, and keep a photo of each item to prove its existence and value. File a claim for lost or damaged household goods through the Defense Personal Property System within 75 days of delivery. Finally, with the reduction in discretionary moves, longer assignments may be the norm, and this may mean homebuying as a rental becomes more economically beneficial.
